Measles Outbreak Kills Eight in South Philippines
Fri December 27, 2002 12:12 PM ET
BUTUAN (Reuters) – A measles outbreak in remote mountain villages in the
southern Philippines has killed eight people, mostly children, and
hospitalized nearly 60, officials said on Friday.
"We are still receiving more patients," said Dr. Cerna Nebrada, chief
medical officer of the region’s National Communities and Indigenous
People agency.
The outbreak in four villages was first reported on December 23 by the
community officer in Santiago, a town at the northern end of the
Philippines’ main southern island, Mindanao.
The Mamanwa ethnic group in the area makes a living through rattan
cutting, hunting and small-scale mining.
"It only worsened last night, when their tribal chieftain brought along
their patients here," said Elvira Catuburan, the chief of the agency’s
technical and management division.
Officials said they had sent a message to President Gloria Macapagal
Arroyo asking for immediate medical and food aid for the victims.
