Hives

My daughter is 12 years old.  She has been breaking out with hives lately.
They are very big and they itch alot.  I thought that it may be from a
feather bed pad that she got for her birthday in Oct so I returned it and I
thought that had solved it but this last week she had been breaking out
again.  I have not used new detergents and she has not been eating anything
differently.  The welts very from pea size to the size of a silver dollar or
bigger.  This last time she broke out her ears swelled up.  We have went to
the doctor the first time that she started breaking out and they did not
help us much.  Benydral helps them go away so I assume that it is allergies.
What can I do to determine what it is that is causing this reaction.  I am
very worried about the severity of these hives I have heard that it can
affect breathing.

Sincerly,
        S. L.

How long and how frequently does she get the hives?  Has she started
wearing any new makeup?  Also; you might try cleaning the mattress and
    flipping it over.
Or even better, have her sleep in a different room (if that’s
possible) and see if the hives continue.
Finally; make an appointment for her to see an allergist for testing.
With the severity of the hives, it would be a good idea for you to
know the source so she can avoid it in the future.

Could it be insect bites?  Some people react to flea and louse
    bites with HUGE welts.

Maybe something at a friend’s house?

What in her routine has changed "lately" … and how long ago was
    "lately", anyway.

What is the distribution pattern of the hives?
      (allover?  where?)

Sounds like allergies to me too. It is not a cold. They don’t last 11
months. There are a lot this the kid could be allergic to: the dust mites in
your carpet and other places around the house, plants and pollen, pets.

    See the allergist again.

    All the best,

    Jeff
