Chilhood Obesity

I am so tired of news articles (see e.g., dailynewscentral.net
http://health.dailynewscentral.net/content/view/47/31/ ) blaming the
childhood obesity problem on parenting, TV, and computers.  While I
don’t deny that children are more inactive in recent decades – and
this media (TV / computers) do play a role, this also reflects a
societal community-based shift.  Today children are driven to
extracurricular activities, children are driven or bussed to schools
far from their home neighborhoods; therefore instead of spending the
entire afternoon (and certainly summer days) playing outside in the
street / park with neighborhood peers, children are driven to "play
dates" and return home…to the TV?!?.  Childhood obesity is partly a
functioning of community changes and this is never mentioned.

Shampoo 'risk to unborn babies'

http://www.healthsentinel.com/news.php?event=news_print_list_item&id=441

"Shampoo ‘risk to unborn babies’", BBC News, December 6, 2004,
Link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4071401.stm

A chemical found in shampoo and hand lotions may damage the developing
nervous system, research suggests.

A US study found methylisothiazolinone (MIT) can affect the growth of
parts of developing nerve cells which help them communicate with their
neighbours.

The work, by the University of Pittsburgh, was carried out in rats, but
researchers are concerned about the potential effect on human foetuses.

Details were presented to the American Society for Cell Biology.

Researcher Dr Elias Aizenman said: "While more research is needed to
determine what effect MIT would have in rodent models, both at the
cellular level and to a developing nervous system, our results thus far
suggest there is a potential that everyday exposure to the chemical
could also be harmful to humans.

"I would be particularly concerned about occupational exposure in
pregnant women and the possibility of risk to the foetus."

Widely used

MIT is used to kill harmful bacteria that like to grow near moisture or
water.

It is often used in personal care products like shampoos and hand
lotions – but also in water cooling systems and in factories which need
water for manufacturing.

However, Dr Aizenman said he had been unable to find any reports about
the effect of the compound on the nervous system.

His team is now planning more research to help understand how MIT
affects the development of cells.

The latest study found prolonged exposure to low levels of the chemical
inhibited the development of nerve cell structures called dendrites and
axons, which play key roles in enabling one cell to transmit signals to
its neighbours.

MIT apparently blocked the function of an enzyme that is activated when
cells come into contact with each other.

Dr Aizenman said: "This chemical is being used more and more
extensively, yet there have been no neurotoxicity studies in humans to
indicate what kind and at what level exposure is safe.

"I realise it’s a big leap to suggest there may be a parallel between
environmental exposure and the noticeably higher rates of diagnosed
childhood developmental disabilities, but I would caution that based on
our data, there very well could be neurodevelopmental consequences from
MIT."

Industry assurance

Dr Chris Flower, of the Cosmetics, Toiletries and Perfumery Association
in the UK, said MIT had passed numerous safety tests and would continue
to be used in a wide range of products.

He said: "There is no cause for concern. MIT has passed all the safety
tests for use in these products."

Dr Flower said MIT was only used in combination with certain other
chemicals in products in Europe.

But he said the European Commission’s independent expert scientific
committee had reviewed all the data on MIT and concluded it was also
safe to use on its own, with limits set on the maximum concentration.

Dr Flower said because MIT was a preservative, if it was introduced
into certain cells in the lab it was bound to affect their growth in
certain concentrations.

But he said the chemical had a good safety profile for the toiletries
and cosmetics which people regularly used.

Need sleep!!

Our 19 month old has never been a good sleeper.  We’ve tried different
things, including letting him cry.  This worked for a while until he got
sick and then we were back to square one.  I’m not keen on doing that
again because now he throws a big tantrum if we ignore his screams and
will fling himself around his crib hurting himself in the process.

We now have the ccrib in our room because he seemed to be having night
terrors and we found it helped if we were right there to calm him down.

He is not easy to get into bed, despite a consistent nightly routine and
he wakes up crying at least twice a night.

I’m getting really tired?  Has anyone got a similar story with some
advice?

Births and perinatal health of infants among women who have had silicone breast implantation in Finland, 1967-2000.

Births and perinatal health of infants among women who have had
silicone breast implantation in Finland, 1967-2000.

Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand, December 1, 2004; 83(12): 1135-40.

National Research and Development Center for Welfare and Health,
Health Services Research, Helsinki, Finland.

Background.

Potential problems with breast implants have been widely discussed,
but few data exist on the childbearing and offspring of women with
implants.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence and
conditions of pregnancies of women who have had cosmetic breast
implantation (exposed women), and the health of their newborns.

 Methods.

Women who had breast implants for cosmetic reasons in the period
1967-1999 (n = 2236) were identified from hospital surgical records.
The births of the exposed women were identified through record linkage
to the Population Register. The perinatal health of the infants was
studied by the data in the Medical Birth Register in 1987-1999. For
each birth to an exposed woman, 20 control mothers who gave birth in
the same year were chosen randomly from the Medical Birth Register.
Differences in mothers’ background characteristics were adjusted by
logistic regression.

Results.

The women had received their first cosmetic breast implants at young
ages (mean 31 years). By year 2000, 26% of the exposed women had one
or more children. Half of these women had not had a liveborn child
before getting implants. Of the 1661 exposed women who had not (yet)
had children, 32% were less than 35 years of age at the end of
follow-up. The women had children at a mean of 4.7 years after the
implants.

Some of the perinatal health indicators suggested poorer health and
others better health for infants of exposed women, but only transfers
to other hospitals and lower birthweight among infants of exposed
multipara were statistically significant.

Conclusions. The study shows that pregnancy and infant health are
relevant considerations with regard to breast implants; further
studies on implants are needed.
